I had to write something similar last year and was about to have to extend it to 3D but the project’s interface concept changed. The difference was the amount of clips was fixed and I needed to find the optimum clip orientation for the tightest possible packing (radius). This is a very slick approach man, thanks for sharing. I’m sure we’ll see this in some interfaces soon ;)
